All the Paper

What would an artist do without his or her paper! But when you're first starting out it's one of the first items that seems to be an added cost that causes many beginning artists to hesitate on buying it. So here we'll break it all down so that as you create your first budget, or scan the local art store, you'll be prepared to buy the very best paper to fit your wallet!

Let's look at these options in more detail.

Cotton vs Pulp

Professional grade paper is 100% cotton. This type of paper holds the water well so the paint can move and flow easily. Different paints used together flow and blend in the way watercolor is intended. This paper is also very durable and will take multiple painting and layers without compromising the fiber. The block or pad that you buy, will have the statement 100% cotton on the cover. Top grade paper will reflect the excellence of the paper in the cost.

Lesser expensive paper and student grade paper will have either a percentage of cotton or will be made from wood pulp and/or cellulose like regular printer paper or college paper. This paper has been prepared to handle watercolor paints but due to its more fragile composition the paper will not handle much water, layering or blending. The frustration caused by the lesser quality papers might not be the better choice for those who really desire to see how watercolor works and how well they can paint.
